Booze Geek – A Game Of Thrones Special

By Dylan Gonzalez

Ommegang-Valar-MorghulisBeer: Valar Morghulis

Brewery: Brewery Ommegang

ABV: 8%

With Game of Thrones really kicking into high gear now, Ommegang has released the fourth and final beer based on the hit show.  Valar Morghulis, represented by the coin given to Arya Stark by Jaqen H'ghar, is a Belgian-style dubbel ale.

The ale was a dark red, like the flesh of black cherries, and produced a thick, long-lasting head.  It gave off the scents of sweet malt and booze, with some hints of dark fruit like prune or raisin along with some mild hops.

I found that the scents were repeated in the flavors.  Sweet, candied malt and booze were the predominant ones.  The dark fruit flavors also crept in there with some caramel traces.  The finish was lightly hoppy and I detected raisin as well.  All of this combined, the beer was incredibly rich in flavor.  On the palate, I found it was medium bodied with a good deal of carbonation.

Overall, I really enjoyed Valar Morghulis.  I have trouble debating whether I liked this or the Take the Black Stout better.  If you enjoy your Belgian ales with strong, rich flavors, then this is a beer you should check out, regardless if you are a Game of Thrones fan or not.

Dylan Gonzalez happens to love beer and comic books and luckily found a place to write about both because he has no idea how to actually make money in the real world.  He lives in a cave in New Jersey.
