Robert Downey Jr. Confirms Iron Man 4 And Gives The Latest On Sherlock Holmes 3

RobertDowneyJrThere was a Deadline story a few days back that Robert Downey Jr. said he would be in Iron Man 4 if his friend Mel Gibson directed it. Reading the interview it seemed pretty clear that this was just an off-hand comment and not a commitment or breaking news. We here ignored it… other sites did not.

During a RedditAMA today Downey Jr. was asked if he was serious about returning to Iron Man if Gibson directed or if he might do it anyway. The actor responded with:  It was an offhanded remark to a journalist and friend. I have other projects in mind for Mel and I – sooner than later the Marvel Roster will be made public and all questions will be answered.

The interesting thing in his answer is the last line. Marvel has been extremely quiet on their future cinematic plans. We know some of the films but nothing about the shape of the third phase. Him saying sooner than later seems to indicated that we should be getting word from Marvel and what’s going on. There first big opportunity to announce things could be at the New York Comic Con this weekend.

And lets not forget that he has another successful franchise going. The lastest on Sherlock Holmes and another fiction character he’s interested in: Yes, we have a Sherlock 3 in development. We want it to be the best of the series, so that’s a pretty tall order. Also, Perry Mason is a property I’m looking forward to developing further, going back to the 1931 book series…similarly to what we did with the first 2 Sherlocks, mining the original material for things that are “new.”

Oh… and then there is this clip from the Ellen show when he comes out and say yes it’s happen:
