Guardians Vs Turtles – A Box Office Battle

TMNTGoing into the weekend, a lot of the Hollywood folk are talking about Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting for the top spot in the box office. They're estimating that TMNT should do around $42 million and then they're looking at GotG's numbers and figuring they'll do about $43 million. Also, looking at the advance ticket sales it appears they are neck and neck.

The thing is that GotG has had stronger legs than anyone expected. The $94 million weekend was surprising enough but $11.7 Monday, $11.9 Tuesday and $8.8 million on Wednesday and $7.6 million last night means the movie has taken in $134.3 million going into the weekend.

According to Deadline, TMNT took in 4.6 million overnight. That is significantly lower than the $11.7 million GotG took in the previous Thursday. TMNT is outselling initial ticket sales from GI Joe: Retaliation that took in $51 million it's opening weekend and Paramount is putting its estimated take for the movie to be in the mid to high 40 millions.

Here are the estimated numbers for the weekend:

Forecast (August 8-10)
1. Guardians of the Galaxy – $43.4 million (-54%)
2. Ninja Turtles – $42 million
3. Into the Storm – $14 million
4. Step Up All In – $10.1 million
5. Lucy – $10 million (-45%)
6. Hundred-Foot Journey – $9.5 million

Now all of that can change based on word-of-mouth. Currently GotG is still rated 92% fresh according to RottenTomatoes.com while TMNT is coming in at 20%… so even if the movie does win the weekend, I don't see it being by much nor doing well long term.
