Rik Mayall, An Honest-To-Goodness Comedy Genius, Has Passed Away

Rik Mayall has died at the age of 56.

His resume speaks for itself. In no particular order there’s The Comic Strip, The Young Ones, The New Statesman, Blackadder, an incredible Jackanory reading of George’s Marvellous Medicine, Bottom, A Kick up the Eighties and Kevin Turvey Investigates, Man Down, appearances as one half of The Dangerous Brothers

He was a snorting whirlwind, an avatar of absolute anarchy, and one of the most important innovators in the British alternative comedy scene. Rik Mayall lit up our screens and took a hammer to our funny bones.

56 is always too young, but this is just terrible. He had so much more to give. How lucky we are that he’d already given so much.
