X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past-Poster-High-Res-600x888A couple of recent interview bits with Simon Kinberg have just floated to the surface during this incredibly successfully, record breaking release weekend for X-Men: Days of Future Past.

First of all, we’ll deal with his comments on the current movie. Talking to Film Divider about various bits of X-business, Kinberg gave a pretty sound explanation for swapping Kitty Pryde out and Wolverine in as the lead role of Days.

[Wolverine] could now mentor Xavier the way Xavier had mentored him. This idea was extraordinarily rich to me. There was something so resonant and ironic about that relationship. Not only do we logically have an explanation, we have emotional justification for why we’d make such a big change. Kitty really has no level of relationship, the same debt to Professor Xavier. Telling this version of the story with her wouldn’t have had the same gravity.

Okay, that’s the best rationale I’ve heard yet.

Now, looking forwards, Kinberg pitched the style and tone of X-Men: Apocalypse to IGN. It sounds big.

The kind of scope and scale we’re talking about is like disaster movie, extinction level event. Sort of Roland Emmerich-style moviemaking, which you’ve never seen in an X-Men movie, or any superhero movie, which I think is exciting.

More importantly, Kinberg promises that they’re trying to make Apocalypse work as a character.

He’s not just somebody who’s out there destroying the world because he can. What he’s doing is – in his mind – justified and validated by a real compelling, coherent philosophy. He tries to proselytise and convert people – maybe some of our most familiar characters – to come to his cause.

So it sounds like, as expected, the Four Horsemen will be made up of characters we know from the series already. Magneto… Wolverine…? They could go all sorts of directions here, and I’ll admit I’m very curious as to what the actual plan will be.
