For the third Planet of the Apes movie in a row, movement coach Terry Notary is on hand to teach the cast how to tap into their inner simian. For Burton’s movie he was tutoring them on how to do the moves inside bulky suits, for Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves’ movies the actors have been in motion capture leotards.
There’s a new video feature on the ‘ape school,’ courtesy of The New York Times. If nothing else, it looks like fun.
The apes do seem incredibly lifelike in the Dawn footage that I’ve seen, thanks to the performances and the detailed, clever CG rendering. I think some people might be complacent about these astonishing effects but if I stop to think about it, my mind gets well and truly boggled.
