James Mangold To Direct Travis McGee Origin Tale The Deep Blue Good-By

deep-blue-good-by John D. MacDonald's fictional hero/badass Travis McGee is finally headed for the big screen, with Deadline reporting James Mangold has now signed on to direct The Deep Blue Good-By, based on the first novel that introduces the character.

The long-gestatin adaptation had originally been set as a star vehicle for Leonardo Dicaprio, but he's too busy now. After all, he still has an Oscar to win. McGree is said to be in the vein of Jack Reacher (played by Tom Cruise on the big screen), a solitary figure who kicks ass and rescues damsels in distress.

McGee lives in Florida and is a slacker most of the time, not committing to anything, until he almost runs out of cash, then he'll take "salvage consultant" jobs, recovering goods for people, keeping half as commission. The Deep Blue Bood-by has him tracking down a serial abuser while saving his many victims. MacDonald's book series spans 21 volumes, so there's plenty of franchise potential here.
