Mother's Basement Owes Over £33,000 To Customers… And £4000 To Starburst. So Far.

Richard Lobos has added up up who is owed what by not-actually-bankrupt-yet-but-closing-their-doors statue and toy discount store Mother's Basement. And it's £33,154.78. Full list (so far) below. Some owed more than even Richard Lobos is.

But the biggest debtor to go public is Starburst Magazine. On their podcast, editor Mike Royce stated,

Now they stopped returning our calls, and then they started to fob us off a few hundred quid here, a few hundred quid there, make no bones about it, it's four grand, it's a lot of money. What happened then, they started avoiding phone calls, and then four weeks ago they said, ohwe're just transferring the company into a limited company, so can you just reinvoice us and yeah, we're going pay you something like five hundred quid a week off this, and we say oh yeah, that's quite nice, except when you know what happened now, pretty cynical ploy what they've done is approached us can you reinvoice the limited company for all this money that's owed. So all of a sudden, they're not personally liable, there's an empty shell of a company with no assets owing the money, because the minute we invoice that limited company, we're legally transferring the debt over.

Nice one, but I'm a barrister, it didn't happen… Cost a lot of money to go through law school, but there's the odd time when it bloody saves your neck.

They are especially upset because Starburst advertising has been used to get new customers – who have now been ripped off as well. They state that they have the owners' home addresses and will be serving them with court papers.

Debbie Sutton: Ok guys here's what's happened to me today, checked my bank earlier to find Mothers Basement have taken the money back they refunded me in early January £167.39 … went to my local branch to be told they can't do anything and its not fraud because I willingly gave them my card details, I only gave them my card details to refund me as she said she couldn't via PayPal I still have the emails luckily, basically they have done a charge back on my card, I'm currently sitting in the citizens advice bureau as that's where the bank told me to go, will keep you updated and anyone else who got refunded via card should check their bank account
