Alan Moore Withdraws From Angoulême Grand Prix

So Alan Moore is one of the three main nominees for the Grand Prix of Angoulême, alongside Bill Watterson and Katsuhiro Otomo.

Such an honour, the greatest in the comics industry, would see Moore made a member of the Angoulême Academy and President of next year's festival. This accompanies the French release of Neonomicon, a major French exhibition of his work and comes after a number of nominations in the past. Though at last count, he doesn't have a passport. So how did he take the news?

Moore told Actual-BD that he'd withdrawn his name. Translated into French and then back into English, courtesy of Aurelien Gaillard.

"No… Didier, I don't go to comic conventions anymore. I've decided not to accept any more awards, don't be mad at me. I'd rather they were given to less conventional people. I don't go to conventions any more, I don't accept awards any more. I can understand and appreciate the feelings of those who choose me, but I only want to take responsability for what I have decided to take on, and not the expectations of others."

"I think Angoulême is the last convention I've been to. I haven't been to one since. I did go to the one in Northampton, but it was by mistake, because I had not understood it was a comic book convention. I don't feel like receiving an award because of the complications it brings about. I don't travel anymore, I don't have a passport anymore. It's not at all peremptory, working on my projects is enough for me."
