So, how do you feel about Olaf the Snowman as Ben Grimm in the new Fantastic Four?
Now, even Movies.com are calling this a rumour in their initial report, so there’s definitely a shadow of doubt lying long over the whole idea. Nonetheless, the very notion provokes an interesting debate, so I think it’s well worth bringing up.
Here’s how the idea was broached in the first place:
Hearing that Josh Gad is Fox’s number one choice for the role of Ben Grimm (aka the ever-lovin’, blue-eyed Thing) in the impending Josh Trank reboot of Fantastic Four is one of those “I never thought of that” bits of casting rumor that just feels right. There’s an innate sweetness to Gad that would shine through Grimm’s orange, rocky exterior in a drastically different way than forcing a bruiser to act sweet. Once you hear it, it’s easy to imagine him in the running as the studio’s top choice.
I see what they’re selling. And it’s not a bad idea, it’s really not. In fact, if it were directing the film, not Josh Trank, and a casting agent up with that idea, I’d get Gad in and speak to him right away.
But I wouldn’t necssarily have thought of him in the first place. And it’s certainly not the way fancasting has been going, I’m sure of that.
Bruce Willis was the last rumoured name for this role, but that was at least two screenwriters and one director ago. Seems like a lot has changed in the meantime.
At the moment, the top-tipped names for the Four are: Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Josh Gad and Saoirse Ronan. That’s working from gossip, online reports and general tattle. We’ll see how it all shakes out officially in the coming… well, days, really. This picture is going to have to come together pretty quickly.
