Breaking Into Comic Using An Obscure Swashbuckling Marvel Character — Without Them Knowing

I got this email today from Pablo Dura talking about how he and his co-creators are trying to get Marvel Comics attention by using a character that I'm sure many have forgotten (except Tom Brevoort as he knows all) .

Here's what Pablo had to say:

What would happen if two foreigners get a writing gig for a major publisher thanks to a comic-book they put on the internet?

To answer this question we have written, coordinate the artist, letter and edit ourselves a comic-book of the Marvel swashbuckling hero from the 70s, El Águila, to show what we are capable of.

It's difficult enough as it is, being an inexperienced artist to break into the comic business but If you are a foreign writer, that road in front of you is even narrower, more winding and full of dangers.

For that reason, and even knowing this is not the standard way writers get their first writing gig for a major publisher, a few monhs ago we decided to dedicate part of our time and money in the making of a comic-book that would look as professional as we possibly could in order to get the attention from editors.

And this brings us to El Aguila, a character taken from a dusty old Handbook of the Marvel Universe from the 80's, which we have used to create a story where we can show our strong points as writers, the humour, development of characters and a respectful but updated approach from superheroes classic stories. Trying to get away from the grim & gritty from the last 30 years, in a similar style of Gillen, Fraction, Pak, Slott or Van Lente.

And the result of all our hard work can be found in the 28 pages of El All-new Aguila, a book which we will hope it'll show we are sufficiently commited to  our targets to transform our ideas and energies in a professional product of quality. And, in case we don't hit our goals, we hope at least people will have a good time reading it.

Best regards and #vivaelaguila
