There have been a few attempts to make a new Barbarella movie over the last decade or two, most recently involving Nicolas Winding Refn. That then morphed into a TV project with James Bond alums Neal Purvis and Robert Wade writing the pilot script.
But for months, we heard nothing of any kind of progress. I just assumed it was another failed attempt.
Now, though, Deadline have learned that Amazon Studios are backing the show and setting it up as an exclusive for the company’s online video service.
This would suggest a modest budget but we’ll have to wait and see.
Amazon are looking for a showrunner now and then, I guess, the lead role will have to be cast. That’s where the potential headlines are – and it’s also where the show is going to hang or fall. I wish them the best of luck.
