Gareth Evans' The Raid managed to balance suspense and action superbly, working its locked-down pressure cooker location with some expertise. For the sequel, Berandal, things have been opened up a great deal and it could be harder for Edwards to make something as tight and trim.
This trailer is full of good omens, however.
Okay, so not every blow actually seems to connect (1:56 never looks like a hit no matter how many times I watch it) and seeing somebody leaping through a window to Handel's Sarabande is bordering on a cliche now, but there's an amazing range of set-ups here. I'm particularly intrigued by the laying out of the knives on the table. That seems to promise something quite vicious, and there's a curious echo of the guns-in-plant-pots scene in A Better Tomorrow.
The Raid 2 will premiere at Sundance and open across the US in March. I can't wait to see it. If you haven't seen the first one yet, I recommend you try to catch up.
