The Man Who Turned Down Detective Comics #27

detective-comics-27-cgc-8.0-pinnacle-hillTommy Zimmer writes:

Store Manager Justin Vahosky was certainly surprised the day one of his customers at his store Comic City in Canton, MI brought in a rare specimen. Enclosed within a brief case you would only see in the movies that contained money instead contained one of the rarest comics in existence. It was an original volume 1, Detective Comics #27, the first appearance of Batman, and commanding a seven figure value in mint condition.

His customer came in with one intention: to sell it. With a chain of stores in southeastern Michigan, Comic City does not usually buy used comics.

And, sadly, this was no exception.

Vahosky noted that when he and his coworker Todd saw this, they were amazed at it. He said he never sees his customers come in with stuff like this, and was surprised at the brief case it was carried in to protect it. Yet, they were no experts on the condition of it, and certainly had no real way to price the rare piece. So, they had to turn him away, and he was disappointed.

But as I remarked to Justin when he told me about their business model, "you have to make a profit on what your customer base wants." He certainly agreed about that.
