It seems like no movie can go into production without some rival project nipping at its heels almost immediately. On today’s docket: The Jungle Book, the Rudyard Kipling book which was already a Disney cartoon and which Jon Favreau is directing a live action remake of for the House of Mouse.

Well, Warner Bros wants in on the Mowgli action too, and has began negotiating with Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu about directing a live action feature for them. The book is in the public domain so no company has exclusive rights to it.

Why they seem to enjoy developing similar projects at the same time as rival studios, though, is still a mystery to me. Sure, Favreau and Disney will probably have a lighter take more aligned with the animated version, leaving Inarritu to take the “dark and gritty” road, but I think the Snow White and the Huntsman / Mirror Mirror showdown proved there really isn’t a demand to see two slightly tonally different versions of the same story we all know.
