Lining Up For Korra

NYCC-Saturday-002

Sofia Annunziata writes for Bleeding Cool from New York Comic Con

After marching around queue barriers and getting a decent seat inside, it was time for the awesome-ness to begin. While waiting for everyone to file in songs from the ever great Legend of Korra soundtrack were playing over the speakers. Korra cosplayers were showing off their best bending skills and I was beyond psyched for the beginning of the panel.

Finally the lights dimmed and they mounted the stage. Among the line up was the Co-Creator and Executive Producer Bryan Kontientzko, co-executive producer Joaqim dos Santos, Janet Varney (Korra), PJ Byrne (Bolin), and The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun, the voice actor for the new character, Wan, the first avatar! Now we get to the good part; seeing the next, not yet aired episode of Legend of Korra.

Per the last episode after Korra is dragged into the ocean by a spirit she washes up on an island with no memory of who she is. Korra is brought to a fire temple, where a sage determines that a dark force has infected Korra, and she must reunite her spirit with her avatar state or the consequences will be dire. Korra is lowered into healing waters, where her spirit speaks with previous avatars Aang, Roku and Kyoshi. They tell her that if she does not find the spirit named Rava, she will die and the line of avatars will not continue. I won't spoil too much, but the rest of the episode basically went like this: Wan is a poor non- bender, who wants to change a corrupt system and joins some others to hunt for food in the spirit forest. He is granted the power to use the element of fire. He ends up chickening out, because the spirit woods are admittedly, pretty freaky. He goes back home, but does not return his power of fire like he is supposed to. He gets into trouble and is banished but allowed to keep the power of fire. Thus the journey begins…

I began to film this with my camera, and was stopped when a pair of arms waved in front of me and I was told to stop filming, Oops, who knew. Later on in the panel I got to see some of the beautiful artwork that goes into an episode of Korra, as well as the painstaking process, that made me feel a little bad for demanding episodes sooner. I never realized that 5,000 individual artworks go into one episode. This season will definitely live up to the already high expectations of The Last Airbender and Season one of LoK. The addition of the first avatar, makes it even more awesome, and the fact that he is voiced (extremely well) by Steven Yeun tops it all off ! This episode left me with so many questions: How did wan become the Avatar?, Who is the mysterious spirit, Rava? and Can Korra reunite her spirit and avatar state before time runs out? I certainly can't wait to find out.
