Michael Chabon‘s novel, The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, might just be the most essential piece of Superman reading I can think of and it’s not even a Superman story. Not literally. It’s a book that reflects on the same ideas, however, while recounting an alternative history that evokes the stories of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman’s creators.

So it’s absolutely no wonder that PBS’ new documentary, Superheroes: A Never Ending Battle features Chabon on the subject of Superman. Here’s a clip, also with Mark Waid and Bradford Wright.

While we’re here, let’s catch up on some previous clips from the film as well as the full Comic-Con panel from San Diego. You’ll see that the trick seems to have been a simple one: get interesting people and ask them questions about representation and meaning in superhero comic books. That’s all it takes.

The full film will premiere on October 15th at 8pm. That’s this Tuesday, up against Agents of SHIELD. Not the best timing. I certainly can’t wait to see this documentary, though. It’s just my kind of thing.
