Booze Geek: Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Ale

Beer: Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Ale

Brewery: Rogue/Voodoo Doughnut

The last time I was adventurous enough to try a beer prefixed by a food, it was Pizza Beer and…well, that didn't pan out so well. So, imagine my hesitations when I decided on reviewing Rogue's Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Ale. To be honest, this bottle has been grabbing my eye for a long time, based on the artwork alone, but the contents warded me away a bit. Was the doughnut beer worth it?

When poured, the beer produces a thick, mocha colored head. The head leaves residual foam as the beer is drank. The beer itself is a dark brown in color. The scents of chocolate and peanut butter are strongly present when smelling the ale, with hints of the banana.

The thing I was most concerned with this beer was how the beer itself would blend with the other ingredients. As I stated, the Pizza Beer did not produce the most appetizing blend. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. The beer is not overly present at all and actually mixes well with the other flavors. Once more, the chocolate flavor comes to the forefront, with the peanut butter present as well. The banana can also be tasted, but it is far subtler than the others.

On the palate, it is a comfortable beer to drink. The carbonation is present, but nothing to ruin the experience. Overall, I rather enjoyed this beer. Would I drink constantly? No, but I think that it would work well as a desert beer and even as a gift for someone. Despite the bad rap this beer seems to get, I would recommend at least trying it.

What to Drink This To:

I see doughnuts and I immediately think The Simpsons. To be honest, this beer seems exactly like something that Homer would enjoy. Beer and doughnuts all in one? How could that make Homer any happier? So, I would suggest popping on your favorite episodes of The Simpsons and enjoying them with a nice bottle of this.
