Meryl Streep Is The Witch In The First Official Image From Into The Woods

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine‘s Into The Woods was an absolute belter on stage and, with a little luck and a following wind, could be magic on the cinema screen. It’s encouraging that Lapine has scripted the film, more so that Sondheim has composed a new song for this movie version.

The first image to be officially released from the film shows Meryl Streep as The Witch. She’s the villain of the piece, more or less. Click through to see her ageing makeup in super high quality.

Various well-known Fairy Tale characters are woven into this story, with Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Johnny Depp as The Big Bad Wolf and lots more big-name, bedtime story casting.

There’s an original plot too, with James Corden and Emily Blunt as The Baker and his wife, ostensibly the hero and heroine, caught up in one one of The Witch’s curses.

Maybe Rob Marshall being the director is less encouraging, but if I’m being absolutely honest, I’d find it hard to count how many times I’ve rewatched at least bits of Chicago and I did prefer his Pirates movie to the ones that preceded it.
