While Film Chronicles were the first site to stick their neck out and publish a claim that Benedict Cumberbatch will be in the next Star Wars film, it’s becoming very clear that his involvement has been rumoured very widely and for a little while now.
Badass Digest and Screencrush appear to have been party to these rumours – presumably, anyway, or I don’t know why else the former cites the latter in their new report. They’ve added some new details to the conversation.
So, first of all, there’s the idea that Cumberbatch has to shake off some more commitments if he’s to find space in his schedule for Star Wars.
Then there’s the point that it isn’t a film, it’s films. The character is expected to recur throughout the entire upcoming trilogy.
And then, finally, there’s a claim that Cumberbatch will be playing a villainous part, “almost certainly a Sith.”
Well, I don’t know how many folk will be surprised by that last idea, and once that’s in place, the notion that he’ll be used across the whole trilogy suggests that, in someways at least, that Cumberbatch will be the new episodes’ Vader figure.
There have apparently been official denials of Cumberbatch’s involvement but without seeing how they were worded I don’t know how much stock we should put in them. For example, if Lucasfilm say he hasn’t signed on, that’s irrelevant and a game with semantics. Aren’t we all suppose already that the deal is still being forged, and that’s why the announcement hasn’t happened?
And besides, if the denial comes from Bad Robot you might as well ignore it no matter what it says. JJ Abrams denied the truth about which role Cumberbatch was playing in Star Trek right until the end.
Perhaps the most encouraging thing about Film Chronicles’ story is that they published it today while the gossip has been going on behind the scenes of the blogosphere for something like a week, maybe more. Has there been some movement that’s yet to trickle through to everyone? Is the official announcement getting closer? You can rest assured that as soon as the flag drops – if the flag drops – we’ll tell you about it.
