Todd Haynes’ Carol, based on based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt, will see Mara co-starring with Cate Blanchett. The romantic thriller is set in 1950s New York and revolves around a relationship that forms between a young, lonely store clerk (Mara) who develops an obsession with an elegant older woman who seems to have it all together but who is stuck in a loveless marriage.
The film had been set to film earlier this spring but it never came together, and presumably the spring 2014 production start interfered with Wasikowska’s commitment to Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak.
Mara and Wasikowska have been up for the same roles before – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, most famously, and Spike Lee’s Oldboy, which both eventually turned down and went to Elizabeth Olsen – and both read quite similarly on film to my eyes, so this seems like a seamless transition.
