Chow Yun-fat

Johnnie To is not one to sit still for long. He has over thirty directing credits to date and that number looks set to continue to rise and rise.

To’s last two films, Drug War and Blind Detective, are gradually rolling out worldwide and you can most likely expect to see them at some point soon, depending on where you live.

Drug War has just opened in select cities in America and will be coming to DVD and Blu-ray later this year and Bind Detective has just opened in Hong Kong and China. There doesn’t appear to be a U.S. or UK release date for Blind Detective yet but following its premiere at Cannes, which was met with mixed to positive reactions, it seems likely that it will be picked up soon.

To’s currently filming a sequel to his 2011 film Don’t Go Breaking My Heart but he already has another film lined up for when he finishes that. It looks like a very promising proposition too, with the director reuniting with actors Chow Yun Fat and Sylvia Chang on a film based on the play Design For Living, as reported by HKTopTen.

The trio last worked together on the drama All About Ah-Long in 1989, a film that helped convince many of To’s talents as a serious filmmaker. 1989 was also very much the year of Chow Yun-fat with the The Killer and God of Gamblers also in cinemas.

There’s been the suggestion for some time that this reunion may happen but it now appears to be pretty close to being set in stone. With Johnnie To currently filming Don’t Go Breaking My Heart 2 and Chow Yun-fat still reportedly working on Wong Jing’s latest, From Vegas to Macau, the film will most likely not go in to production for a few months but I shall be keeping my eyes peeled for any more news and reporting back here.
