Things Are Heating Up in "Fire City"

cover-1By Brian Lubocki & Michael Hayes

We brought 1,000 free comics of our demon noir fantasy to Comic Con this year. We'd never been. And we'd never written a comic. But there we were.

Besides the comic, we had an 8-foot tall demon with grossly twisted horns, four eyes and razor sharp teeth – taking pictures with little kids, comic book aficionados and cosplay fans.

As the fans circled like paparazzi, we felt for a brief instant that our dreams had come true.

THREE YEARS EARLIER…

We were semi-professional screenwriters in Los Angeles, which is to say that once in a while we got a few bucks to write scripts. But we wanted to make something ourselves for once. So we came up with an idea.

The world was called "Fire City," mixing our favorite parts of the noir and horror genres, and focusing on demons. The story world quickly got huge, large enough to support comic books, as well as other literature, games, and ultimately a feature film franchise.

We partnered with Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. , an Academy Award-winning creature effects company, who made creatures for the X-Men movies, Spider-Man, Alien Vs. Predator, and many others. They loved our world and built an 8-foot demon for us.

Over the next three years, we shot test footage, developed more of the world, and created a demon compendium. We also created a comic book, called The Interpreter of Signs.

The comic book sets up a demon character called an Interpreter of Signs, a fortune teller in Fire City who helps maintain an unspoken Balance between demons and the humans who cannot see them for what they truly are. It also introduces a character named Christopher who obtains a very powerful item from the demon world. We shot a short film directed by creature designer, Tom Woodruff, Jr., that closes out Christopher's story in addition to starting the Interpreter's.

We had accumulated many iterations of our world, but there was still something left to do.

WHICH LEADS US BACK TO NOW…

And a Kickstarter campaign for Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs.

As we write this, we're one week into our campaign and 26% funded. The response has been fantastic and we're extremely hopeful of reaching our goal. But we've heard that the middle of a crowdfunding campaign is often the most difficult part, so we're looking for an extra bump.

For our friends at Bleeding Cool, we pose this challenge: help us reach the 50% percent mark by Wednesday, 7/31, and we will add a special Bleeding Cool prize of a limited edition set of 7 TAROT CARDS to every pledge at $89 or above. This will be a unique prize only available to Bleeding Cool donors. Just message us that you are from Bleeding Cool, and the limited edition set will be added to your gift pack.

Thank you Bleeding Cool!
