Spotlight On Dean Mullaney At San Diego Comic Con

deanRay Brown writes from San Diego Comic Con for Bleeding Cool;

Dean was set to be the next assistant editor at Marvel, but Shooter took over, so he decided to start Eclipse instead.  And Eclipse was a pioneer for creator rights.  So Jim Shooter was indirectly responsible for Eclipse and creators' rights.

When Steve Gerber  and Eclipse decided to do a project to raise money to try to get Gerber the rights to Howard the Duck, Gerber originally wanted the character who became Destroyer Duck to be called Stanley (i.e. Stan Lee) the Rat.

Pacific Comics were originally going to do Marvelman, but they went under before it ever came out.

His goal was always to get graphic novels in bookstores.  Bookstore distribution channel ended up screwing Eclipse, which is why Eclipse went out of business.

When he decided to get back into comics, it was specifically to try to reprint Terry and the Pirates, which is his all time favorite strip.  So he called IDW and started the Library of American Comics.

IDW is going to be releasing two-book set, Genius Illustrated and Genius Isolated, which is part biography of Alex Toth and part a showcase of his art.

On Saturday at the IDW booth, they are premiering Superman: The Silver Age Dailies.  They are going to be doing Batman and Wonder Woman as well.

IDW also announced they just concluded a deal to reprint the Ripley Believe it or Not cartoons.
