…well, he’d just say “no comment” or something like that.
One of the words I tested was Zootopia. That’s the title of an upcoming Disney movie from Tangled co-director Byron Howard and featuring Jason Bateman as, it would seem, the voice of the lead character, apparently a Fox.
Del Vecho was giving me nothing. He’d obviously heard this word before and knew very well what it meant, but there was no verbal acknowledgment to be had.
Today, that same word popped up in a report at Blue Sky Disney. Zootopia. Just one new title in a report that spells out what we can expect from the next few years of Walt Disney Feature Animation.
On a film-by-film basis, here’s what they revealed:
- Zootopia in 2016. Was originally being directed by Howard and his Tangled collaborator Nathan Greno until…
- Giants, also in 2016. A fairy tale story from Greno that will “show you how much his influence on Tangled truly was.”
- Moana, possibly in 2018. Likely to be the first Disney feature to use a hybrid CG-hand drawn style, and currently being developed by Ron Clements and John Musker.
- Then an as-yet unconfirmed, still in flux film about a “teenage space race,” from Tick Tock Tale director Dean Wellins.
We’ve spoken about Moara before, just not by name. Last time I called it:
something “fresh and original, not a fairytale movie,” apparently has a setting somewhere in the south pacific and a Tiki carving as a character. Will it tie into the Enchanted Tiki Room theme park attraction? Uuuhhh… probably not.
One of the strongest visual influences on the film is the work of Paul Gauguin, which is certainly very promising.
All in all, this seems like a pretty varied bunch of films, being made by a talented roster of filmmakers. Wellins’ film in particular is sounding like a fresh prospect, but there’s nothing here that seems stale.
My interview with Del Vecho will be on site later in the summer. He wasn’t giving up too much about the future, but he certainly had a lot of interesting things to say about Frozen.
