Pacific Rim Clip – A Human Battle On A Giant Scale

There’s something about the physical scale of the combatants in Pacific Rim that is in itself incredibly compelling, but I have a strong suspicion that there is a hell of a lot more to Guillermo del Toro‘s film than just multiple giants clashing.

Check out this new clip, originally posted at Time, and then let me take a few paragraphs to explain why I might think that.

As you no doubt gathered, the clip featured a Jaeger, one of the robots  built to defend the earth, clashing with a giant monster but it began with something on a much smaller scale. The potential human cost of the fight.

Also during the sequence there was a cut to those piloting the Jaegar. They are the ones who are really fighting the battle. Even in that short sequence there is obvious exertion from the pilots and they are clearly working as a team. Pacific Rim may have a giant robot hitting a monster with a cruise liner but I suspect that del Toro is telling a story about people here, not machines.

Ever since I first started seeing the marketing for Pacific Rim the reference point that I’ve always found myself returning to is Neon Genesis Evangelion, a TV series that was ultimately far more about human interactions and frailty than it was about giant robots. If del Toro has channeled even a fraction of the depth of something like Evangelion I’ll be a very happy man come July the 12th.

Oh, and that neon drenched look Pacific Rim has. I can’t wait to drown in that at the cinema.
