UPDATE: Video removed by request of Voltage Pictures.
This trailer and extended package of clips from Terry Gilliam‘s The Zero Theorem have been hiding in a quiet corner of the internet for quite some time, at least since the Cannes marketplace.
Today, though, they started to make waves on Christoph Waltz fan Tumblrs. As soon as they turned up on YouTube, I thought I’d go ahead and share the trailer. It’s out in the open now. The genie is out of the bottle.
But you might think hard about clicking through the uploader’s channel and watching their other upload. It’s over ten minutes of the film and it spoils some of the story’s admittedly plentiful surprises.
Zero Theorem is an absurdist sci-fi comedy. Christoph Waltz stars as a kind-of-hacker trying to solve the seemingly impossible theorem of the title. Don’t expect anything like realistic computer science.
There are plenty of great actors in the cast, but I don’t think even Matt Damon, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw et al can steal attention from the sheer vibrancy and invention of Gilliam’s filmmaking. I read the script and loved it, but watching Gilliam’s interpretation of the scenes… he really made them sing.
The Zero Theorem is seeking distribution now. Expect to hear that it’s premiering at the Venice Film Festival.
