Joss Whedon last night guested with recently promoted chat show maestro Jimmy Fallon. The main topic of conversation was his superb new film version of Much Ado About Nothing, though you should be precisely unsurprised to hear that they talked a little about The Avengers 2 too.
Whedon has decided to writer the characters of Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch into his screenplay for the film… but why? He explained:
Besides the fact that I grew up reading them, their powers are very visually interesting. One of the problems I had on the first one was, everybody basically had punchy powers. 'I can hit,' 'I can also hit.' Hopefully it didn't get too boring. But coming into the second one, he's got super speed, she can weave spells and a little telekinesis, get inside your head. There's good stuff that they can do that will help sort of keep it fresh.
Just a few days ago, Singer tweeted out his intention to use Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past. I bet we'll look back on that tweet like it was the first pistol shot in a war. Neither Marvel Studios of Fox are going to take a passive approach on this one.
It could be said that Fox are somewhat ahead in the game. They've already cast Quicksilver, and Days of Future Past will open almost a year ahead of The Avengers sequel. I wouldn't be surprised to see Marvel try to leverage Comic-Con for a high profile response, however, rolling out the full Avengers 2 lineup, almost like they did with the first film three years ago.
Which would mean that they want to fill the roles quickly. It was said that Whedon was building his take on the Scarlet Witch to suit Saoirse Ronan. This week, The Mary Sue asked Ronan about this, and she was obviously rather excited by the prospect:
I have heard about it and yes, I would. Yeah, of course I would. I love Joss and I love those films, and I love his handle on them and how he portrayed these kinds of superheroes. I think it's very different from what anyone else has done. So yeah, I'd love to be in it.
Joss wants her. She wants in. We want her too, right? What could possibly stop this from happening now?
Well, there's your Pearl Harbour maneuver, Fox, if you're looking for one. But do you have the sheer depth of chequebook to change Ronan's mind?
