There’s an odd twist to this story that niggles me and makes me doubt that everything is quite lined up straight, but if you’re not scared of the spoiler and want to read on, I’d love to hear how credible you find it all.
The pieces clicked together at Ain’t It Cool News. They took the buzz about Lex Luthor appearing in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and started making enquiries through official channels…
…but came back empty handed. So they went off-map, and started speaking to sources who’d want to stay anonymous. As you do.
And somebody they trust piped up and told them that not only will Luthor be in the film, and not only will he be “an ambitious, ego driven and cold version,” but also which actor has been cast in the role.
Apparently, the part has gone to one Mackenzie Gray.
Here’s a video they then posted, found in ancillary research, in which Gray talks about his involvement with the film.
Here’s the key bit of what Gray says:
I can’t say what I’m playing. I’m allowed to say I’m in the movie. That’s it.
What he’s playing, rather than who? I’m sure I could read too much into that quite easily, so do try to stop me.
But there are alarm bells ringing here. First of all, I feel a little sceptical that Warner Bros. would give such a key role to Mackenzie Gray. That’s not a criticism of his acting, at all – I can’t say that, as of yet, I even have an opinion of Mackenzie Gray – but rather an acknowledgment of the star power I’d expect they’d try to pack into this part.
And then there’s the fact that Gray already appeared in Smallville, as a clone of Luthor.
That just messes things up a little. That draws in Smallville where it doesn’t need to be drawn in. This doesn’t sound like a typical studio casting move.
Maybe I’m very wrong.
My hunch, in so much as I can really imagine anything too specific here, is that Gray will be playing one of Zod’s cohort. Or maybe some kind of version of Brainiac. That might just have influenced him to say “what” rather than “who.”
Yeah, I told you I’d read too much into that.
Anyhow, it seems like Lex Luthor is almost certainly in the film. Have Warner Bros. got a secret bit of star casting hidden away somewhere? And why haven’t any of the leaked screening reports mentioned his character at all?
Man of Steel will be with us on June 14th. That’s far enough away that I expect we’ll see a few more twists on this rumour yet.
