The End Of Alex De Campi's Ashes

The End Of Alex De Campi's AshesAlex De Campi writes to those who donated towards the Ashes graphic novel Kickstarter, As I did for a whopping $30 including shipping to the UK.

You will not be getting an Ashes trade.

What now?

You will be getting a circa 450-page cased hardcover of Smoke AND Ashes.

Phew.

Signed by me. The extra-signed copies will also be signed by most of the artists. This is the good news. The slightly poor news is that you will have to wait for September as I am piggybacking the 1,000-copy cased HC run on the larger trade paperback run of the book. Why am I doing this? One, I want you to get the most book possible, because you have all been so awesome about the long, strange journey this book has taken. Two, frankly, it costs me less to pay the trade publisher for a limited (1,000 copy) cased HC run of Smoke/Ashes than it would for me to just print Ashes by itself. As well as being about the same speed, as turnaround for a small job at an overseas printer including shipping is about four months. Nuts, huh? And you'll get a better book, with fewer typos, etc. And a case! Woo!

The cased HC will have a new cover by Tomer Hanuka. It will contain all the previous Ashes covers as chapter breaks. It'll have an intro by Kieron Gillen, who's known me since we were both indie kids selling scurrilous fanzines at extinct regional British comic cons.

RETAILERS! I have a shit-ton of incentives for you when the book comes out. Also, please note again to thank you for your patience I am having your copies of the book air-frieghted to me as soon as they are printed so you will be getting them in advance of everyone else. Thirdly, you will also be getting an extra book for every 5 you ordered. This enables you to price the cased HC at the same price as the paperback will be solicited for ($29.99) and still have almost a 50% markup. I cannot say how far in advance (weeks? a month?) you will have the HC before the trade comes out but it won't take me very long (24hrs?) to batch your books out to you after I receive them. The books are printed overseas and shipping normally takes a while so I'm hoping you'll have a good month's lead on everyone else. We are going to have about 250 cased HCs left over which we're probably going to use as con exclusives (probably at NYCC); their price point will be a whopping $59.99.

I am not getting it six months ahead of any trade as promised. But I am getting a 450 page signed book instead of a 250 page book. There is no James Hodgkins/Jimmy Broxton but there is Bill Sienkiewicz and Carla Speed McNeill. It hasn't been the easiest of Kickstarters… but after reading the digital versions I've been receiving, it has been one of the more enjoyable.
