Have A Look At Napoleon Dynamite's Creepy Condom-Porno-Man Short Film

Patrick Dane writes for Bleeding Cool

"Where has that Napoeleon Dynamite bloke gone?" is a question that I've heard every once in a while. I now have an interesting answer for the next time.

Seems that Jon Heder has turned to producing and helped director Nick Peterson get their short film Drained Kickstarted, filmed, animated, finished, and now released online. If you are expecting something along the lines of any of Heder's big screen comedies, you'll be in for a surprise.

I was at the Encounters Film Festival a couple of weeks back and there was a ton of 'experimental' shorts there, and Drained would have been right at home. I do think the stop-motion-meets-live-action look creates a very creepy effect.

However, I am not sure that the message is as sophisticated as Peterson might think. It's a point fairly well made, if perhaps over stated, but it is still a pretty simple argument about how terribly men can treat women in their relationships. There does seem to be an anti-porn message being fed through a sequence of the film and while porn is a sticky subject, it is maybe a little naive to say that men turn toxic after exposure to pornography.

And we're not being critical in this observation, but Brendon is convinced that there is a religious component to the film, and I don't think he's necessarily wrong.

For all of the animation technique on display Drained is clearly not just a stylistic exercise but driven by passion for the subject matter. Makes me wonder what Peterson is going to want to tackle next.
