There’s some juggling going on down in Wellington, with Peter Jackson moving the pieces about in order to turn The Hobbit from two films into three. What we don’t know, for sure, is if this means that the boundaries between the first and second pictures will have to be moved.
As a result, any discussion of how the first film might end or the second begin could prove to be hanging on out of date info, even when a member of the production is involved. Just bear that in mind.
All the same, it’s interesting to hear Benedict Cumberbatch reveal how Smaug is, was, maybe still is being introduced in the first Hobbit movie, not least because it tips us off to a bit of teasing, crowd-pleasing business in Jackson’s strategy.
He was out doing the rounds, plugging Parade’s End – which starts on the BBC this Friday and looks absolutely tremendous. This small Smaug quote was donated by journalist Anne Richardson to a Cumberbath Tumblr:
I think my eye might open at the end of the first film and then you’ll get the rest of me in the second.
From that comment it seems like he was talking when there were just going to be two films. Still, I’d bet on this still standing, particularly if they do go with The Desolation of Smaug as a middle part title.
Wouldn’t it be something if the full look of Smaug could then be kept secret until the next film was finished and screening?Impossible, I’m sure.
Now, Tumblr being Tumblr, this Smaug quote was ‘reblogged’ by other fans, some of who added comments of their own. This is the one that amused me most:
… sounds like the ending of the first half of twilight: breaking dawn … i hope smaug gets to keep ben’s beautiful eyes,…
That’s from a Tumblr with an URL telling us The Earth Revolves Around Ben.
Anyway. The Hobbit is coming this December, and Parade’s End starts on Friday. Good times.
