Tom Hiddleston And Steve Coogan Playing Porn Baron Paul Raymond In Duelling Movies

Michael Winterbottom‘s King of Soho went into production a couple of months back and, for all I know, it has already wrapped. It stars Steve Coogan as British pornographer and smut house proprietor, Paul Raymond, and features Anna Friel, Imogen Poots, and Tamsin Egerton as Raymond’s wife, daughter, and girlfriend respectively. Coogan compared the film to another of his collaborations with Winterbottom, saying:

Like 24 Hour Party People, we want to capture the life of an extraordinary man living in extraordinary times.

The film shares its title with a book by Howard Raymond, son and heir. It does not seem to be, however, an adaptation of that book, at least not any longer. Though Raymond Jr. appeared to have been in bed with Winterbottom late last year, he’s now attempting to mount his own, separate biopic of his father, using his book as source material. And, according to The Daily Mail, he may have landed on the star that could over shadow Coogan and Winterbottom – Tom Hiddleston.

You can’t imagine how delighted I am by this – chuffed to bits. We’ve waited a long time to get the right person and in Tom we finally have. It’s a difficult role, not because he is playing my father but because he is in every scene in the film. We have a great script and some time in the next year we will be going into production.

There’s no news on who is writing this second film, or who will direct. Raymond’s other comments serve to comment on Winterbottom’s film more than his own. Says the Mail:

‘It will be like chalk and cheese,’ says Howard, who dismisses the rival production as something akin to a carry-on spoof. ‘We call it Carry On Up Old Compton Street,’ Howard says.
