The Remarkable Comic That Is Sioux Warrior

At Kapow last weekend I discovered a rather remarkable comic book. As digital comics compete to create more innovative experiences unique to that medium, this shows how much more room and scope there still is for physical print comics to do new things.

Below is a video flick through of the first two issues of Sioux Warrior, from Cape Fear Comics. by Sam Gardner Jr, Lee O'Connor and Jake Rowlinson. The first issue is hard to open, thick, the magnet snaps back and the music starts, this is a musical comic with a speaker and recording built in. If you want more, there's a CD of the action involved, with voices playing the parts. But it's not just this physical trickery, one act in this comic is told in the round, a circular panel filling the page, which, if you rotate, you get a diferent picture and different text, all from the same circular picture, four in each. It's a bravura performance that adds a real element of poetry to this coming-of-warrior-age comic.

The second issue takes on more superhero elements – literally. And the comic becomes its own costume, a utility belt folding out containing the comic, elastic and a cape, a cut out mask in the cover and a story that is as much about the Fibonacci series than anything.

The third issue is meant to contain video elements. I can't wait…
