Motor City Comic Con 2012

Motor City Comic Con 2012Vincent J. Cracchiolo V writes for Bleeding Cool;

The Motor City Comic Con in Novi, Michigan held its 23rd convention this weekend, and it continues to be a great convention.

Ethan Van Sciver was busy drawing commissions most of the weekend, but he was pleasant as always to talk to. He is working on the Green Lantern annual with Geoff Johns, and he is still working on an original graphic novel with Gail Simone. He says he is about halfway done as it is something he is working on in his spare time. He is not allowed to tell me the name of the project either, not because it will give anything away, but because DC wants to save it for a big announcement. I asked if he would give me the title after a few shots at the hotel bar, which he admitted he would, but I did not see him there.

Motor City Comic Con 2012Mike Grell is going to be working on a project through Amazon called 47 North. They are going to be doing the 3 novels in the Mongoliad series and releasing them as slip covers, including 56 illustrations by Grell. He says they are right up his alley as some involve exotic women.

Brian Pulido just finished up Lady Death #24, but would only talk about things up to the current issue #18. He says that issue will have a climactic resolution and that a new order will be instilled. He has some movie stuff in the works and Zombies vs Cheerleaders in 2013.

Motor City Comic Con 2012Dave Aikins was showing off all his zombie artwork as well as doing lots of Spongebob and Dora the Explorer sketches for the kids. I have to say that all the talent was well aware of Bleeding Cool, and Dave says he is scared of the day that he finds himself involved on the Swipe file on the site. We had a nice discussion on the merits of what actually makes something a swipe versus something that is a reference.

XICW wrestling was on hand doing multiple shows throughout the weekend. It was fun to see a wrestling organization mix with a comic crowd. Some wrestlers tried to tie a comic theme to their matches, but the best was seeing a wrestler get his face slammed into a Captain America shield held by a young girl in the front row.

Motor City Comic Con 2012I can't say enough about what a great show this is. They get a nice mix of old and new guests between the media and comic talent. My daughter is a big fan of the Phantom Tollbooth, and so she was thrilled to meet Butch Patrick of The Munsters fame. Danielle Harris from the Halloween movies was great to talk to, and Donna D'Errico let me know that she was able to handle the pressure of going from Baywatch Nights to Baywatch.

This was a great weekend, and I look forward to seeing what they do next year.
