I’m a big fan of the original Gambit, a witty and zippy caper with some very nifty plot twists and winning turns from Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine. Remaking it well could prove to be pretty tricky, but (even after The Ladykillers, which wasn’t exactly a homerun) I feel encouraged that the new version has been written by Joel and Ethan Coen.
Michael Hoffman, the director, did well to cast Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz in the key roles. They feel like real movie stars to me, and that’s what this kind of thing needs. In the first snippets of footage to surface we also get a quick look at Alan Rickman doing something so Alan Rickmany that I’m confident he’s in a fitting role too.
You’ll see these brief clips in this Film Is Great Britain promo, as has been playing in Blighty’s cinemas for a while.
Yeah, they went past pretty quickly, but… movie stars in their undies. I know at least 15% of you are too grateful for that.
Hopefully we’ll get to see more of the film soon. Perhaps some trousery bits.
Also: is that really a quick clip from Skyfall at 57 seconds? It’s Daniel Craig in suitable attire, but… well, you tell me. If so, there’s your first look at the next Bond film in motion.
