Two New Chucky Projects Announced

I have a mutant ability. It's an awful one but you work with what you have and what I have is the ability to never watch a Rocky movie all the way through. Seriously, I can find the last twenty minutes of Rocky IV on TV with the unerring accuracy of a Doctor Who fan in search of an agenda, but a whole one? Not even nearly, not even once.

The Child's Play movies are exactly the same, which is a shame as I'm a bit of a mark for a good piece of creatively unpleasant horror. I have it on good authority that the last Chucky movie in particular is tons of nasty fun and it would seem I'll soon have a choice between jumping on there or waiting for the pseudo-reboot.

The Cynical Optimist had boots on the ground at the Mad Monster Party in North Carolina. One of the big attractions was a Child's Play reunion panel featuring Brad Dourif, Chris Sarandon, and Alex Vincent. They announced two Child's Play sequels, both of which Dourif is apparently involved in, and both of which seem to be going interesting places. Revenge of Chucky is set to feature Chucky's immediate family but it's the reboot, oddly, that caught my attention. Directed by Don Mancini, it's expected to be a darker retelling of the origin, with some extra twists thrown in. Done right that could be exactly what the series needs; not so much a do over as an on ramp. Done wrong, the worst that will happen is there'll be another trashy disposable horror movie out in the world and if that had any lasting effect, why the global economy, general sense of wellbeing and the idea that every principle piece of societal architecture would be questionable at best and corrupt at worse would run absolutely rampant.

Oh.

Oh dear.

I think I need to go lie down in a darkened room.

And maybe watch a Chucky movie…
