Nickelodeon packed their upfront session today with plenty of new announcements, including some long-awaited good news for Last Airbender fans. My favourite surprise, however, is their special plan for a seasonal new Spongebob.
As well as a whole new series of Squarepants’ show as we know it, and I’d guess mostly love it, there’s also going to be a feature-length stop-motion animated Christmas special, somewhat in the style of the old Rankin Bass shows like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. You know the ones – they were all over the place at Tesco last December and when you bought them and took them home they just weren’t like you remembered them and you felt like another bit of your childhood had fallen away as though ash from the end of a cigarette, into a little puddle of tears.*
Not many details of the new special were revealed, but we do know that John Goodman has been cast in the role of Santa. And that’s not just a guess, though it very easily could have been. The show is going to be called It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! and will detail what happens when Plankton serves everybody food laced with jerkonium.
A lot of the plot will come from this “hit record” that SpongeBob had a few years back.
This will not be the first time for SpongeBob in stop-motion. Screen Novelties gave his opening credits a puppetoony makeover for a 2009 episode. Look:
I wanted that to be in 3D.
*That’s a true story, but not about me. I liked them just as much as I always did. Which is “a bit.”
