A new interview with Stallone at MacLeans is pretty comprehensive, touching on most phases of his career, and many of his best known films. At times the answers are quite amusing. For example:
Reagan came out and said, “After seeing Rambo I know what to do in Libya,” I went, “Oh, no!” Rambo is neutral. ”
Rambo is me before coffee in the morning. Rocky is me after coffee.
[Schwarzenegger and I] couldn’t stand to be in the same room. But I like a good adversary. It makes you lose sleep and want to get up in the morning and go to the gym.
And so on.
But there’s also news of a couple of upcoming projects in there, if that’s all you’re looking for. First:
I have one coming up based on a wonderful film that was done in Spain, No Rest for the Wicked. It’s hard-core, in the Bad Lieutenant mode. Badder Lieutenant, we’re calling it.
And, finally, Stallone’s comments on another Rambo:
I’m dying to do another Rambo. He’s in Arizona on the border. It will involve him going into Mexico. I don’t think Rambo likes Mexicans.
But he was neutral just a couple of minutes ago! Is hating Mexicans suddenly a neutral stance?
This isn’t quite everything he said about the possible next Rambo. There was one final exchange that amounts to quite a big spoiler. It isn’t that it hasn’t been discussed before, and it really does seem like the right thing to do, but you still might not want to know.
So look away now if you don’t.
Okay – here’s the final exchange of the interview.
Q: So will you kill him off?
Interesting choice – Rocky gets to live, Rambo dies. I’d certainly like to hear Stallone address why the two characters are intended for these different on-screen fates. What is it about each of these stories that fits these resolutions?
Well, if nobody has asked him before I get a chance to, I certainly will.
Stallone continues work on Bullet to the Head and the second Expendables with The Tomb coming soon.
