Fred Hembeck's Variant Covers For The Avengefuls

In April, Boom are publishing four comics I've written… The Avengefuls drawn by Joshua Covey, Captain American Idol drawn by Chris Haley, Scienthorlogy by Mike Netzer and Iron Muslim drawn by Bryan Turner, all with covers by Mark Stafford. Parodying the Marvel movies, they also take on aspects from Holy Terror to Anonymous Vs Scientology to the presidential record of Barack Obama to current moves within Iran to develop nuclear technology. The plot runs through from comic to comic, but they can also all be read individually. And they should be very silly indeed.

But one thing I'm really proud of is that Boom have commissioned Fred Hembeck to draw four variant covers of the books. I grew up on early Fred Hembeck, his strips reprinted in Marvel UK news stand comics, and was blown away by the Assistant Editor's Month where he got to draw almost an entire issue of Amazing Spider-Man. And then I found an American copy of the Fantastic Four Roast... I didn't get any of the jokes that referenced sixties and seventies American sitcoms., but it didn't matter. Fred was brilliant. He contributed a Captain American Idol pinup to Civil Wardrobe, a comic that was in many ways, a sketchbook for the Avengefuls titles, also featuring a cover by Stafford and Netzer drawing Thor Of The Church Of Scientology, and Kaare Andrews giving us Osama Bin Hulk. And now Fred is back again.

If you want copies, this week is the last time to tell your retailer. I don't expect there will be a large overprint, and shops are rather risk averse over projects such as these. So if this intrigues you enough, tell your retailer now.

Anyway, here are Fred's four variant covers. I can't wait…
