Scottish Government Looks To Keeps Comics Away From Maxim

Scottish Government Looks To Keeps Comics Away From MaximScotland is the home of many of Britain's most prestigious comics, specifically The Beano and The Dandy, both running for almost eighty years.

But a more recent publication is causing problems for some newsagents.

And now shopkeepers could be fined if they don't keep comics away from the likes of Maxim, GQ, Loaded, FHM, Nuts and Zoo, often featuring nudity and full of sexual content.

In Britain porn magazines are relegated to the top shelf of newsagents (which gives the publisher Top Shelf Comics a whole different vibe in the UK). But the phenomenon of "lads mags", started by Loaded in the nineties, has blurred that line, general interest with increasing sexual content.

Now the Scottish Parliament has commissioned research that has found "a lot of magazines are being displayed at heights of between 1m and 1.5m, in full view, with no attempt being made to cover them up".

And the Scotsman reports that the politicians are now talking about a mandatory code to cover the magazines up with opaque sleeves, move their position on the shelf, and keep them well away from the comics.

Apart from Viz Comic of course – and most newsagents already keep that on the top shelf, thanks to strips such as Buster Gonad And His Unfeasibly Large TesticlesSid The Sexist, The Fat Slags and Nude Motorcycle Girl.
