The model designs don’t live up to those in their debut picture, Coraline, but this second film from stop-motion house Laika has clearly maintained the same richness of texture. I’m sure that Paranorman is going to be an easy, lush watch at the very least, for all of the exquisite craft and model-making.
Coraline‘s director Henry Sellick has moved on from the company now, and that’s been of some concern, but this clip proves that they can still attract, and benefit from, the work of dozens of extremely skilled and creative artisans. Some of the character animation in this promo was really great stuff.
I feel much more optimistic about Paranorman now, and am very keen to see more.
Time to get your Frankenweenie trailer out, Disney. You’re losing ground in this imaginary war that I just invented.
