The Canny Comic Con – Newcastle's Answer To San Diego

The Canny Comic Con – Newcastle's Answer To San Diego

Two cities, both on the coast, with working harbours. Both have a history of international trade, manufacturing and tourism. And now both have a comic convention.

They may be on sligjtly different scales however. But The Canny Comic Con, being held next Saturday does have one jewel in its crown that San Diego does not, one of the best selling comics in the world, it's the home town of Viz Comic.

Which is why Viz's Simon Donald will be attending, along with Bryan Talbot, Nigel Auchterlounie, Doug Braithwaite, Alex Collier, Paul Davidson, Gary Erskine, Al Ewing, Steven Finch, Mary M Talbot, Suzy Varty, Art Heroes, Gary Bainbridge, Mack Chater, Brittany Coxon, Cuttlefish, Jack Fallows, A.J. Garrett, Mel Gibson, En Gingerboom, Ingi Jensson, Leonie O'Moore, Ed Murphy, Graham Pearce, Paul Regan, Gordon Robertson, Lee Robson, Paul Scott, Paul Thompson, Andrew Waugh, Stacey Whittle, Terry Wiley and Lydia Wysocki.

The show launched on the night of Friday the 9th with Drink and Draw Launch party – and a showing of Howard The Duck at the Tyneside Cinema, followed by a a day of comics festival, exhibition, panels, sales, signings and workshop through the Saturday at Newcastle City Library, admittance free.

I have fond memories of four years as a student in Newcastle. This would be a grand excuse to return…
