Monsters University Character Art Reveals The Younger, Slimmer Mike And Sully

I think there are three particularly great representations of male friendship in cinema: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All The President’s Men and Monsters Inc.

While there’s no Woodward and Bernstein prequel practically possible, and Butch and Sundance the Early Years didn’t really live up to the later ones, I’ve got every hope that Monsters University, the prequel to Monsters Inc., is going to come off well.

Pixar revealed some new details of the film at D23 yesterday, and despite the supposed banning of cellular devices, some images of the younger characters have arrived online. I’m thinking deliberate leak – it’s very easy to see somebody taking this volume of pictures.

Note Mike’s “retainer” brace on his teeth – presumably to push his teeth out of alignment and make them more scary. This prop will apparently feature in the plot somehow.

John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Steve Buscemi have returned to voice Sully, Mike and the villainous Randall Boggs, with other, as yet unnamed characters from Inc. making cameos. New additions to the cast will include Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray and Pete Sohn, director of the Pixar short Partly Cloudy.

There was little new info given about the film’s storyline, but it’s sounding more expansive than one might at  first imagine. For one thing, it will apparently start in grade school when Mike and Sully first meet; for another, the Monsters University of the title will teach more than scaring – but what these other classes would entail remained teasingly under wraps.

Director Dan Scanlon pledged that one key location from Monsters Inc. is going to be revisited in the film, but in “a new way”. I can only assume this means the Scream production plant? I’m thinking a factory tour? So much teasing.

The images above appeared on the Twitter feed of longtime Disney buff Stitch Kingdom, for which I am very grateful. Monsters University is released late next year.
