UPDATE: I’ve now put a good quality version of the logo at the head of the story.
As the D23 expo goes on, we’ll be seeing and hearing a whole lot more about Wreck-It Ralph, formerly Reboot Ralph, even more formerly Joe Jump. This ambitious, and aesthetically unusual toon is Disney’s big CG release for Thanksgiving next year. Here’s the official blurb:
Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives, featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness.
He sneaks into the game with a simple plan – win a medal – but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy.
But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?
I understand that the look of the characters, and indeed the film overall, changes significantly as the action moves from one game environment to another. Some scenes will be rendered in the polished semi-realistic CG we’ve come to expect, while others will apparently employ full-on pixel art – and there’s going to be a few other varied looks in between.
Animatie have run some snaps of an arcade cabinet out on the D23 show floor, revealing the film’s title treatment and, with it, the faces of Wreck-It Ralph and Fix-It Felix. These pictures only hint at the visual range we’ll get from the movie.
Note that the game is apparently by Tobikomi, which means plunge or dive.
If you’re there at D23 and you can get to play on the machine, I’d love to know what the game is like. I’m expecting a Donkey Kong Jr. clone.
Rich Moore is making his directorial debut on the film, and that’s a good thing.
Hopefully they’ll release some more solid info during the rest of the D23 weekend.
