First Image From Coen Bros. Scripted Caper Film, Gambit

Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth are starring in Gambit, Michael Hoffman’s do-over of the frothy 60s caper picture. Also in the cast are Cloris Leachman, Stanley Tucci, Alan Rickman and Tom Courtenay.

One reason to be particularly interested is that the original film’s screenplay by Jack Davies and Alvin Sargent was really clever, witty stuff, while still being supremely silly; another is that the new adaptation has been written by the also clever, witty and supremely silly Joel and Ethan Coen.

It looks like the Coens have changed up a lot of the details, with the characters names and professions being altered, and who-knows-what in the story line’s central heist having been reinvented. I’m sure they’ve done a great job, though.

Here’s an excerpt from the press release:

Shooting in London and in New Mexico, the story centers on British art curator Harry Deane (Firth) who devises a finely-crafted scheme to con England’s richest man and avid art collector, Lionel Shabandar, (Rickman) into purchasing a fake Monet painting.  In order to bait his buyer, he recruits a Texas rodeo queen (Diaz) to cross the pond and pose as a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII.

That came with an image of Diaz and Firth, in costume but apparently not character.
