Twelve Years Experience #4 by Joel Ronson – Free Comic Book Daze

Twelve Years Experience #4 by Joel Ronson – Free Comic Book Daze A hit at the Kapow comic convention in London, Joel Ronson is a twelve year old young man who loves comic books. And wants to let other people in on it.

On Saturday, my friend and I went to Free Comic Book Day! You can just tell from the name that it is pretty damn awesome.

When the doors opened you got given a bag with three comics in it. My bag contained a discovery channel comic, Sonic the Hedgehog and a Smurfs comic, which left me thinking "I queued up for THIS!?".

A few minutes later I saw a woman with a Spider-Man comic in her free comic day bag. I think to myself "this event is only here to take the piss out of me" but then I saw a table with piles of the Spider-Man comic on it. I ran over and got one for me and one for my friend.

I got myself to the front, right where the table was, when more people started coming. My friend appointed me as the grabber.

More comics came onto the table. There were a lot of very childish ones and a few that were based on video games but they were free so I was happy. Mayhem really started when Captain America & Thor came onto the table. That was when there were the most amounts of people. "Get me fucking Sonic the Hedgehog!" people shouted across the table. I have never heard people want Sonic the Hedgehog that much.

The shop's plan was when most of the comics currently on the table were taken, they would put out more but it was taking too long so I, and a few other people, started going into the free comic boxes. It was like my favorite type of riot, a getting free comics riot!

There was only one thing in our way, an incredibly scary looking bodyguard type wearing a Punisher t-shirt. It did cross my mind that marvel based The Punisher on that man. Every time I tried to get some free comics out of the box I looked up and The Punisher was standing there.

Finally a woman came to get the free comic boxes in preparation for more comics to be put out but because of my brave requests she gave me and my friend the comics that we didn't have that were in the boxes.

A few minutes later she put out those comics on the table. This lot of comics was probably the best one. The last lot had Spider-Man and Captain America & Thor but this lot had 2000 AD, a cool looking comic called Spontaneous, a cool looking comic called Silver Scorpion, The Stuff of Legends and a comic which half of it was Green Lantern and the other half was Flash!

Even though the Free Comic Book Day website said they had even more comics to put out, the nice man at the store who also gave me and my friend a V for Vendetta mask and an awesome Green Lantern ring that lights up, said that those were all the free comics they had to put out.

So, even though my friend and I missed out on Atomic Robo and Friends amongst others, we were still both incredibly happy with what we got. And I walked out happily with my Green Lantern ring on, my V for Vendetta mask on, my Superman head strap thing on which I also got in my free comic bag and a bag full of free comics.

I hope you have enjoyed this column and I will be back for a rant next week!
