Tuesday Trending Topics: Comic Lovers, Your Table Is Ready. But Who’s Serving?

Posted by April 27, 2011 Comment

Or your chairs are ready, anyway. But I’m not saying anything new by noting that an awful lot of corporate dollars are currently focused on an industry that has been rather famously hand to mouth for much of its history. It feels a little bit like the internet and we’re about to party like it’s 1999, but then that turned out far better than anyone would have imagined for a handful of the smart and bold.  12 years after that, here’s what’s on our minds:

Barnes & Noble To Become “THE Destination For Comic Lovers”

In early June, we will begin carrying both Marvel and DC Comics titles that until now have only been available in comics specialty stores. We’ll also have new assortments from such publishers as Dynamic Forces, so series like the popular Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan and Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris will come straight to your store. We will continue to search for new and exciting titles to add to this category to drive customer interest and sales.

Mark Stafford’s Realism In Comics

This is a piece that Mark Stafford (Cherubs, Civil Wardrobe) knocked up to show to Marvel talent editor CB Cebulski when he was meant to visit London for the Kapow! Comics Convention. Sadly CB didn’t make it over due to unavoidable circumstances, so now it’s good for sharing…

The New Justice League International

It was the book that stopped me being a Marvel zombie in my tracks and opened the door fully, for me, to the DC Universe. Then with Justice League Europe and Justice League America in a double act, I was hooked, and when this storytelling team left the book, I stuck around for two issues before dumping it, and pretty much all the other DCU titles I was reading at the time. I felt like the entire line had abandioned me.

Here are the two next Green Lantern character posters, showcasing Mark Strong as Sinestro and a lot of swanky CG as Kilowog.*

Post-Credits Scene From Thor Leaks Out

I am not looking at the post-credit scene from Thor that has made its way onto the internet. No, I intend to watch it, with wife, on the big screen later this week. If you have already seen the film and want a reminder, or maybe you walked out before it ran, or maybe you just don’t care and have no soul, then here you go. I’m embedding it now. Just don’t tell me what happens.

First Official Image From The Avengers, Official Plot Set-Up

How long have they been shooting The Avengers? A day? And there’s an official still already?

Trending Topics on #comicmarket Tuesday

#comicmarket is an ongoing but mostly tuesday twitter hashtag for comic retailers, pros, and interested fans. Among this week’s best-received books by the retailers who have already seen ‘em are Action Comics #900, Walking Dead, and Planet of the Apes. The eyebrow raiser of the week was a little bit of uncertainty about the success of the big summer events so far — Flashpoint and Fear Itself.  I starred some tweets from the day as I was following along, so here are some hilights:

Want to compete with B&N? Be better! They may have lower prices, but the #comicmarket is our specialty! Know the product, know the fan.

Just_Charlene
RT @ronmarz I want comics to be available everywhere. “No one else allowed in the comic clubhouse!” is killing the industry #comicmarket

@Just_Charlene Many retailers see B&N as a feeder market & increased exposure. Others are debating the #comicmarket, don’t be frustrated

Oddly enough, seems like most comics from Big2 are written BY COMMITTEE – story conferences, editors, architects, crossovers #comicmarket
