The first wave of Marvel movie-meshing is coming to a head. In just over a week, principal photography will begin on The Avengers, and the prep and second unit work is already underway. So… we’re on the home stretch. But what then? What comes next?
The best information we’ve been given so far comes right from the horse’s mouth. Kevin Feige has given an interview with D23, the Disney fanzine, and laid out what he sees as the next moves in the Marvel playbook:
Thor will go off into a new adventure, and Captain America will continue to explore the modern world in another film of his own. We hope that holds true for the characters appearing in that film – Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the spy organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. – all of whom are more than worthy and capable of carrying their own films. And, we’ve got a lot of other characters we’re prepping and getting ready for film debuts: the world of martial arts, these great cosmic space fantasies, Dr. Strange, and the magic side of the Marvel Universe. There are many, many stories to be mined.
So, that’s more clarification than anything else, but it’s good to get a reading on Feige’s temperature right now. Should Thor tank (which isn’t inconceivable, I’m afraid) I expect he’ll drop a few degrees and maybe let loose a single, cold bead of sweat.
But I don’t expect Thor to flop, nor Captain America.
Let’s not forget that Marvel seem to be plotting, if only loosely, another big crossover for 2017.
IGN have another quote from Feige, pulled from D23, and the magazine itself is bound to come with a bunch more when it reaches subscribers in early May.
