Of the various upcoming Snow White movie projects, the one I’m most intrigued by is Tarsem Singh‘s version. Adapting such a simple story to feature length will always require expansion, and according to the official press release, here’s how this one is goin:
A retelling of one of the most beloved fables of all-time, will eschew the traditional story in favor of a more modern tale full of comedy and adventure. After her evil stepmother kills her father and destroys the kingdom, Snow White bands together with a gang of seven quarrelsome dwarfs to reclaim what is rightly hers.
So far, only the evil stepmother had been cast. Julia Roberts won the role last month, and immediately set the bar pretty high. She’s both a bona fide star and strong actress and a film can’t really be small when she’s inside it.
Now, it’s been announced that Armie Hammer has been cast in the Prince Charming part. Hammer’s most recent roles were in The Social Network and The Social Network, and he’s currently shooting Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar.
The prince’s name is Andrew Alcott, like the “Filipino Italian and American wrestler.” How odd.
Meanwhile, Deadline report that Saoirse Ronan is negotiating to play Snow White herself. With principal photography set to start in May, she would do this before The Hobbit. I hope she does, because I think she’s superb.
All in all, it’s a classy cast, and I think Tarsem will provide some nicely textured, emotive images. The only real question I’d have would be about the screenplay, by Melisa Wallack and Jason Keller. They’re pretty much unknown quantities to me.
